About the event
This workshop is a book discussion of a novel written by deaf and hearing (interpreter) contributors. The book is a fun read and goes in depth on four main topics. The topics below are serious and important, but the way the topics are weaved into the story gives insights, hope, and (shock) a happy ending.
Part I looks at sections I and II of the book. Section I features discussion on the role of caring on the part of interpreters and others regarding the Deaf-World. Section II of the book engages the on-going (yes, it is stilll going) debate about Cochlear Implants (CIs) in a contemporary manner. Guest moderator for Part I is Roxann Molignoni who is a mother of a deaf son. Roxann brings unique insights into the role of caring about the Deaf community as well as opnions about CIs. The moderators will guide participants to discussion points about caring - as shown by book characters and lived out by one particular character, Viv. The topic of CIs will be covered with sensitivity, reality, and balance as one main character embraces her CI and one does not.
Part II looks at sections III and IV of the book. Section III features discussion on interpreter second cultural identity. Section IV of the book engages discussion on the role lack of communication access for deaf/hh/DeafBlind citizens plays in our society and the work of interpreters. Guest moderator for Part II is Tina Perry who is a CODA. Tina brings insights into second cultural identity as well as opinions regarding communication access, lack thereof, and the impacts of these dynamics. The moderators will guide participants to discussion points about second cultural identity of ASL signers by comparing deaf, CODA, and L2 (second language interpreters) in their identity development. The topic of lack of communication access will be handled by a storyline where ASL and English bilingualism is a natural fit and it is just another way to express communication freedom as an American family.
